A new approach for moving picture response time characterization of LCDs

During the last years many efforts have been devoted to measurement and characterization of the so-called MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time) that is one of the major artifacts of LCD TV quality. The MPRT method is defined as a technique to quantify the motion blurs a human feels when he views a moving picture displayed on a LCD while he is in a condition of smooth pursuit eye tracking. Several characterization systems with pursuit camera have been proposed on the market to measure directly this motion blur. In general these systems are quite complex and expensive and in addition limited to given working conditions in terms of moving speed. Results are generally expressed as motion blur magnitude depending on grey levels.

In the proposed paper we show that same MPRT data can be obtained much more easily and directly by simulation using measured conventional grey to grey responses times. Indeed, we will demonstrate that a full liquid crystal cell temporal characterization is sufficient to predict the complete temporal behavior of any display. This analysis can be made in grey levels or in full color if the temporal characterization is also performed on the different types of primary pixel. In addition more complex situation than just box or bar moving pictures can be predicted. This offers a powerful tool to predict motion blur in any working situation and will be useful to people involved in the improvement of the quality of such displays.
